Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
