Israel Strikes Iranian Territory as Explosions Heard in Tehran
Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant blasts rocking Tehran, amid statements from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, without initially offer further details.
Background: Rising Tensions and Recent Events
This event takes place against a background of severely escalated strains in the region. Major developments preceding this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of American warships in the region, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They dismissed claims about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
